TOWN councillors heard that many parents in Camelford have growing concerns about the closing times of Enfield Park toilets.

Cllr Kirsty Ferguson, deputy mayor, reported to the town council at its recent meeting that many parents have brought up concerns with her about the toilets in Enfield Park when they are locked.

Cllr Ferguson told the meeting: “I’ve had many complaints, mainly by parents, about the toilet locking at the park. Several people have had to let their children urinate in the park in the bushes. Is there any way we can remind people of the locking times, or is there anywhere where we can hold a key?

“The parents that use it love using our park, but if their children can’t hold it and the toilets are not open, then they’re being allowed to urinate in our park.”

Cllr Rob Rotchell reminded his peers that when the toilets were previously managed with a keeper of the key, sometimes the toilets would be left unlocked all night, claiming it was ‘very hit and miss’.

He added: “If I have this conversation, I’m very reluctant to hand over a key.”

The toilets are locked from 7pm during the summer season, and the council is reluctant to leave them open all of the time due to concerns about vandalism.

Esther Greig, town clerk, told the Post after the meeting: “I am going to look into ways to keep them open longer by asking the businesses that are open later if they would be prepared to help out, hold keys and, or, exploring other staffing options.”
