HOLSWORTHY Social Club has been celebrating 100 years since opening.

The Post reported (January 22) that the Public Institute as it was then known, on Station Road, was built in 1914 and opened to the public on January 28 1915 by Alderman H Higgs JP.

It was Alderman Higgs who gave the land to build the Institute for use by the general public of Holsworthy and District, young or old.

The Public Institute became Holsworthy Social Club in 1972. The building has been added to but still resembles how it looked when built.

The billiard room, now known as the snooker room, had one table to play on when opened and acquired another in 1932.

It boasted a reading room, which is now the bar, and a games room. The Stewards Bungalow was converted in 1997 to extend the club area and a flat was built over.

As a members' club, a person has to join to enjoy all the facilities available.

Members celebrated the anniversary last week on the same date it opened, on January 28 and a special beer — The Institute Ale — had been made by the Holsworthy Ales brewery in Clawton to mark the occasion.
