A GIRL from Tintagel will be embarking on a 300-mile cycle through Death Valley in memory of her father, as well as raising funds for two charities close to her heart.

From November 12 to November 19, Kate Holland from Tintagel will travel to the Death Valley National Park on the borders of California and Nevada, where she, along with 20 others, will be cycling 300 miles over five days in order to raise money for two charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and Bodmin Hospital, of which offered tremendous support during difficult times.

This cycle challenge is in memory of Kate’s father, Brian Holland, who spent the last few weeks of his life at Bodmin Hospital last year.

Brian worked at the Tintagel Londis for eight years, and was a well-loved member of the community.

During his time at Bodmin Hospital, he and his family were ‘treated with the upmost dignity and respect, and the care he received was second to none’.

Brian’s dream was to visit the Death Valley park, having spent much time researching the area, collecting maps and planning his intended visit.

Therefore, when the cycle challenge opportunity arose, Kate knew she had to sign up.

Speaking of her upcoming challenge, Kate told the Post: “At the moment, I’m really excited for Death Valley and the challenge. I’m sure the nerves will kick in nearer the time, but I’ve got three weeks left to prepare as much as I can.

“It’s a place my dad wanted to visit more than anywhere else, so I’m looking forward to being there for personal reasons, but also to complete the challenge and aim to raise as much money as I can for Bodmin Hospital and Macmillan, two brilliant charities that help so many people.”

The trip has been completely self-funded, meaning that every penny donated goes directly to Kate’s chosen charities.

Kate added: “The cycle is completely self-funded, so 100% of all donations will go directly to the chosen charities and hopefully what I raise can be put to good use.

“Thank you to everyone that has donated and wished me luck cycling through one of the hottest and driest places on earth!”

Tomorrow (Friday) from 8pm onwards, a prize bingo evening will take place at Wadebridge Social Club, and a charity spin class will take place at One2One Fitness in Wadebridge on Saturday, November 5 from 11am.

All donations will be added to Kate’s funds for Bodmin Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support.
