TINTAGEL Carnival Radio has been on the airwaves, and one of the volunteers has reflected on the week of broadcasting.
From 1982 to 1992 I was privileged to do a weekly broadcast for Radio Beacon, at the St Lawrence Hospital in Bodmin, writes David Flower.
I did a show each Tuesday morning from their studios to around 2,000 patients and staff in the hospital. I suffered a heart attack in 1992 and did not return to the radio station.
You can imagine after a gap of 24 years to actually return to a broadcasting studio was a little worrying!
This time apart from being on the normal radio at 87.7FM we could also be heard all over the world. I must admit on the morning of my broadcast, which was scheduled for 6pm that evening, I woke up feeling very nervous. My programme was called With A Song In My Heart.
The Hospital Radio Station was a more leisurely, amateur station and you had to select your own records, organise your programme and put the records on!
I had not intended to air on the radio but I wanted to help a little on this wonderful first ever occasion when a radio station had its own studio in Tintagel at the Old Malt House, and it was to be broadcast all over the world via the Internet.
They were short on presenters and other help and they asked me to go live on air on the first day I called into the studio! I met up with Rafael Krasnodebski, the owner of the Old Malt House, who had the idea of operating a radio station called ‘Tintagel Carnival Radio’. This was to tie in with the Tintagel Carnival.
I was privileged to work with a very professional team at the station and I must admit I felt overawed to start off. However, the professionalism, friendliness and marvellous dedication and enthusiasm from the team, soon had me feeling comfortable and at home.
All over Tintagel and over the world for a week the station was live on air from 7am each morning until 7pm in the evening. The three main presenters Raf, Conrad Kobic and Rom Krause, put in a very long day to bring this wonderful station on air and I can tell you they were all very exhausted at the end of an arduous week.
On behalf of the people in Tintagel, our visitors and all over the world, I would like to say many, many thanks to Raf for organising this unique event for the village, his family Sebastian and Ula, Konrad, Rom, Mike, Robert, Gunita and Ella.
We all enjoyed Tintagel Carnival Radio and hope that they keep their word and return for next year’s Carnival. You are now off the air and already being missed by a lot of people.
Thank you so much Raf, thank you all.
