FIFTY seven Launceston Seniors took part in an individual stableford competition off full handicap on Tuesday November 11. At 11am the Klaxon was sounded to allow those on the course and in the Clubhouse to observe the two minute remembrance silence.
Strong wind helped in drying the ground which had suffered from the extremely heavy rain for the previous three days. The wind however meant that only the winners of the three handicap divisions returned scores better than par, and only 8 twos were achieved from a possible 285.
The use of a few temporary greens meant it was not a qualifying round so the winners got away with preserving their handicaps, Tim Johnson in particular. Again the forecast had its effect on turnout and of the 21 groups six were played as twos instead of the intended threes.
Division One: (1-14): 1st, John Mullins (Club Captain) 38; 2nd, Brian Ben-David (Seniors Captain) 34; 3rd, Peter Wall 33.
Division Two (15-19): 1st, Tim Johnson 40; 2nd, 2nd John Russell 36; 3rd, "Swiss" Joe 35.
Division Three (20-28): 1st, Mike Shellswell 39; 2nd, 2nd, Mike Barriball 36; 3rd, Tony Bowden 34.
Sixty three Seniors took part in a three division full handicap stableford competition on Tuesday November 18.
Some 20% members had dropped out, probably due to the forecast, meaning that several of the three man groups were reduced to two. In the event the weather was kind and all greens were in play. The course was playing long due to the lack of run on the fairways and only one of the nine winners was better than par.
Trolleys were allowed but head green keeper Graeme politely asked those using them to lighten the load as much as possible. Some players changing to carry bags found during the round items such as gloves, bananas, chocolate, drinks and pitch repairers had not been transferred.
Division One (1-14): 1st, Paul Roach 36; 2nd, Jim Manson 35; 3rd, Brian Ben-David 35.
Division Two (15-19): 1st, Gerald Cramp 37; 2nd, Tim Johnson 35; 3rd, Tom Northam 34.
Division Three (20-28 ): 1st, Clive Small 36; 2nd, Graham Williams 33; 3rd, Norman Redding 33.
