BUDEHAVEN student, Tilly Dumbleton, has recently raised £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and St Clare Hospice, through a charity afternoon tea event.
Tilly, who has just finished Year 7 and will soon be going into Year 8 in September, wanted to raise money for charity following the sudden passing of her grandmother.
Sadly, Tilly’s grandmother got sick very quickly, and died within six weeks of her diagnosis. Tilly was adamant to support the charities Macmillan Cancer Support and St Clare Hospice, which is based in Essex.
Whilst her grandmother was sick, the local hospice sent nurses from Macmillan to care for her during her final days. Described as ‘warm, caring and sensitive’ by Tilly’s mother, Lynsey, the nurses were a great support, not only to Tilly’s grandmother, but to the whole family during this difficult time.
Tilly was keen to hold a bake sale to raise money for these vital charities, but wanted all of her family to be there. As the rest of her family live in Essex, Tilly decided to hold her charity event there, and came up with the idea for a memorial afternoon tea.
A keen baker at home, Tilly and her cousin, Morgan, planned and produced some delicious scones, cakes and homemade treats to sell at the afternoon tea event, which was held in their grandmother’s local village hall.
During her lifetime, Tilly’s grandmother made and created all sorts of items. With their grandfather’s permission, Tilly and Morgan planned a raffle that gave every winner the chance to win something their grandmother had made.
Over 1,000 raffle tickets were sold in total, with over 70 people attending the afternoon tea, raising an astonishing £1,000.
Tilly’s mother, Lynsey, said: “It was a very emotional and amazing day; we felt so proud of Tilly. We would like to say a massive thank you to the Cream Tea Society for the free jam and cream, and to Budehaven teacher Sarah Windle for helping with the baking.”
