It's the doddery old woman on about the little office in the Crescent again. I know I said I'd finished writing but I feel I have to say something about what's going on now.
I'll quickly go back over things for those who don't know. We have a lovely little office in the Crescent car park where you can go to sort out anything to do with the Council business. It was not given a snazzy name like 'One Stop Shop' but that is what it was. North Cornwall Council ran it but the lady there would help with anything, even if it was to do with the County like holes in the road.
Well, the new Cornwall Council is shutting our office down and moving it to the library. Nothing against moving to the library if our service is going to be the same. Trouble is it's going to be a lot less of a service over there.
When I wrote to the paper about these things the One Cornwall put in a piece about how great the new 'One Stop Shop' in the library was going to be. They act like they're giving us something we never had before but we've had an excellent service in Bude for more than twenty years.
I just want some honesty about things. The Cornwall Council have an idea called, 'One Stop Shop'. It's a good idea and I'd be all for it if they took what we were getting from North Cornwall and added extra to it. The trouble is they've never really bothered to see what the old Bude office did and never asked us, the people who use it, what we want.
We value the privacy of our old office, we value the services we could get there and value the fact that we have one lady to deal with who knows us and understands our case.
A lot of people said I was wrong about having to stand in the open library discussing our business next to people ordering library books. They said, "The Cornwall Council is putting in a private office for us. There is an office but that will only be used once a week by people travelling up from Wadebridge. Our normal business will be in the open library standing at an open counter."
In fact the help we used to have every day won't really be there at all. We'll have to take pot luck as to who is on the counter to deal with us. Whoever it is won't be able to help us half so well as the lady at the Crescent.
The little office in the Crescent was advertised as closing on Friday March 30. I now understand Cornwall Council has decided it will stay open for a bit longer while they work out what services are going to move to the library. I'd have thought it would be simple. All our services are needed and all of them should still be provided in Bude.
Come on Bude town Council, come on Bude councillors, where are you? Those down west have always thought Bude was too close to Devon to bother with. It's your job to show them we don't have straw in our ears up here. Don't let them pretend they're giving us something when they're really taking services away.
