ALTARNUN Community Choir and friends entertained a packed audience in the village hall with a selection of songs and poems themed around the letters of Christmas.
Altarnun Brownies — Evie Williams, Chloe Cole, Ellen Wadham, Beth Gillbard, Phoebe Scott, Connie Smart, Lily Grimes, Rebecca Saunders, Rosie Preston, Lewella and Annelise Batten — started the evening with a poem and then, with choir musical director,Trudy Bailey, introduced a poem and two songs associated with each letter.
With many popular songs the audience’s feet were tapping but they had the chance to sing along with the choir to ‘Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer’. A lively rendition of ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’ and a poem read by Richard Hay, Robin’s Song, completed the pieces for the letter R.
The Brownies sang ‘All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth’ and the concert finished with ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.
Jo White with ladies of the choir served teas and coffees accompanied by a selection of mince pies, cakes and other goodies.
Ticket sales and raffle raised more than £300 of which £160 will go to the Children’s Hospice South West and £140 will into the fund to buy a community digital electric piano to be used by the choir, Penpont Players and other community groups.
Trudy Bailey thanked the Brownies, readers and choir for making the show possible, Peter Allen for lighting, sound and the backdrop images that magically appeared behind the choir for each song, members of the bowls club for setting up the stage and seating and the audience for turning out on a wet and windy night.
The choir will be taking a break during January and February but will be back working on new songs for performances later in 2016 from the beginning of March.
