CHERYL Maughan, a supply teacher who has recently had breast cancer was planning to raise money through the Stride walk for Cancer Research at Lanhydrock.

As The Mighty Maughans, four of the family were doing the walk —John, Ben, Emily and Cheryl. Daughter Anna and partner, Tony were excused as they were Mani minding — their son and Cheryl's lovely grandson — She gave herself a new nickname on Mani's behalf — bit of biscuit.....Grannybaldi!

Unfortunately, she was taken ill after her final chemotherapy (hence the skinhead look, pictured) and so ended up in Royal Cornwall Hospital the day before the walk.

However, the rest of the Mighty Maughans did it on her behalf. They started off at the back of the pack at Lanhydrock and Emily said: "I know it's not a race but I want to be first — for Mum and Lesley (our pal)," and she was!

Cheryl has promised she will do the Lanhydrock walk or the equivalent when she is properly fit.

She would like to thank all those who contributed — her total stands at £1,670 and there is still more coming in. Thanks especially to The Wellington Hotel in Boscastle who raised over £600. Cheryl was the top fund raiser of the day at Lanhydrock.

Known to many of you in the 'Post' area as 'Mrs Maughan' after many years of working as a supply teacher, Cheryl, from Boscastle.

Cheryl will be well remembered by many of you as "that brilliant teacher who played the guitar and sang and did great voices when she told stories."

She would like to say that she actually did proper teaching as well! Cheryl would like to add that she had already planned to retire from teaching this year, and has not stopped work through ill health.

If you would like to contribute, you can still do so, at various outlets in Boscastle, send a cheque payable to Cancer Research UK to The Nest, Potters Lane, Boscastle PL35 0AW or pay on line and leave a personal message - website http://www.donatetobreastcancer.org/cherylmaughan">www.donatetobreastcancer.org/cherylmaughan
