RE: LOOKING Back 1969 (the 'Post', April 30). The report about Davy House's May Day Rag brought memories flooding back!
Teachers, students and parents worked hard for weeks to plan and organise the events. These were: A bed race — competitors were teams from each house at the college; Davy, Burnard, Trevithick and Lanyon. Pupils and teachers adapted bedsheets for the race and decorated them.
The route was from the sheep market, down New Road (St Thomas Road), through the River Kensey at Newport and up Roydon Road to the field now occupied by houses at Roydon Close. The teams were in pyjamas or striped nightshirts donated by Launceston Hospital.
My part in the race was as a passenger sitting in an old fashioned wicker bath chair (where did we find that?) The journey down New Road was, to say the least, scary and we got stuck in the river!
There were several events held at Roydon Field — plate smashing, a barbecue and various slideshows. The highlight of the evening was a piano smashing competition between various teams including the college, Young Farmers' Club and the youth club.
The May Day Rag ended with a very successful dance at Launceston Youth Club. The band was called 'Aquarius' and they played to a capacity crowd of 300-400! Teachers and parents, including Ralph Alford (head of Davy House), Peter Cotton and Ken Rodgers were 'on the door' to keep an eye on things.
It was a wonderful day — such fun and very successful — wish we could do it again! Thanks for the memories.
Launceston.
