RESIDENTS of Camelford are to be given the chance to view and comment on draft proposals for a new Tesco store on a controversial site in the town.
Tesco hopes to create the new store on the site of the former Camelford Primary School but this was not high up on the list of possible uses when residents were canvassed.
As well as the store, Tesco hopes to include a recreation area for community use and says it is in discussion with a third party about a possible new medical centre in the area,
In October, 2010, the 212 people who filled in a questionnaire responded in the following order of preference for uses of the site:
1, medical centre; 2, recreation ground; 3, municipal block; 4, food retail; 5, industrial site, 6, housing.
In August the year before, residents celebrated the planners' decision to throw out a scheme to build 58 homes on the site.
Emma Heeson, Tesco corporate affair manager, says: "We believe that a new store should reflect the needs and shopping requirements of Camelford residents, businesses and visitors.
"We are also keen to complement the ranges offered by existing retailers in the town, so we are considering a small store focusing on core food product ranges."
