CONFIRMATION that Tesco has pulled plans for a store in Holsworthy has prompted a mixed reaction from the community.

Torridge District Council gave permission for a food store on the former livestock market at Underlane at the end of January.

The proposal generated mixed feelings from the community, but the sale of the site was necessary to fund the new Agribusiness Centre run by Kivells.

Tesco confirmed with the Post last week that the proposed store was no longer the most suitable way to serve the community.

A spokesperson said: "Following careful consideration we have decided not to pursue plans for a Tesco in Holsworthy.

"Changing customer habits towards online and convenience shopping mean we no longer think the proposed store is the most suitable means by which to serve the local community.

"We have discussed our decision with the local council, and we are exploring alternative uses for the site and will keep the local community updated."

Mayor of Holsworthy Cllr John Allen said: "There has been a mixed reaction from people. Some are disappointed, but equally there is relief from some traders in the town who were concerned Tesco would affect their businesses."

Cllr Allen, who runs Southbourne Cook Shop and Catering Supplies in Holsworthy, feels customers' shopping habits are changing with more shopping 'little and often'.

"I think the trends are changing from the major supermarkets and people are more conscious of what they are spending. Some buy little and often to avoid waste from a large weekly or monthly shop."

Now, thoughts turn to what will replace Tesco.

Stephen Whitelaw, owner of health food store Nature's Way, was 'pleased' as he felt the town did not need another supermarket.
