FROM Tuesday, March 31, the swimming pool at the Phoenix Leisure Centre will be closed for approximately four weeks, to replace the ageing boilers and facilitate other necessary remedial works.
The boilers will be replaced with a modular heating system linked to a state-of-the-art combined-heat-and-power unit, which will greatly improve efficiency, helping to reduce the running costs. The system will also generate electricity, reducing the carbon footprint.
The rest of the centre will continue to operate as normal while these improvements take place, however the centre will be unable to provide showering facilities. The school holiday activity program will continue to run as normal, with the exception of swimming sessions. Where swimming is normally offered as part of an activity day, this will be replaced with other games and activities.
Furthermore, there may be days when the centre is unable to open at all, or only for reduced hours, however disruption of services will be kept to the bare minimum.
A North Cornwall District Council spokesman said: "We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause, but we are sure you will appreciate the improvements we are making."
During the periods when facilities are unavailable, you may wish to visit one of the other leisure centres at Bodmin, Bude, Camelford or Wadebridge. The staff aim to re-open as normal on Monday, April 27 at 7.30am.
The spokesman added: "Finally, may we take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. We hope you will stay with us as we work towards a more modern and environmentally sound leisure centre with a long and bright future."
