BEDS at Launceston Hospital are to temporarily close to allow improvement works to be carried out.

Short-term closure of the inpatient facilities will allow a refurbishment programme by NHS Property Services, the owners of the hospital, which will include a new roof, windows and flooring in addition to some resurfacing of the car park and repairs to outdoor areas.

The beds will close temporarily from September 15 and depending on the weather, it is anticipated the beds will re-open at the beginning of November.

During the work an extra treatment bay will be created within the minor injury department, expanding the capacity of the unit and improving patient experience.

Su Buse, matron at Launceston Hospital, said: “We are really excited to see this work being undertaken which will make a real difference to our patients.

“To ensure patient wellbeing, safety and quality of care while the works are being completed, we will temporarily close the beds within the hospital but all other services will continue to run as usual. This includes the minor injury unit, outpatient and dental clinics.”

The chairman of the League of Friends of Launceston Hospital, Pam Parnell, said they are pleased that the work will be carried out and that closing the inpatient beds temporarily means work will not be disruptive to patients.

She said of the announcement of the upcoming work: “We are delighted about it — absolutely delighted. It’s something they have been talking about for ages.”
