THE 1937 King George’s Silver Jubilee telephone box in Trekenner, no longer needed by BT, has officially come back to life in its new guise of a public library.

For many days in the late summer local parish council member Godfrey Holter had given it a careful restoration with fresh red, black and gold paint, polished glass, new bookshelves and signage — a starter supply of books came from Mary Synott, another local volunteer.

The grand opening was held on Tuesday, October 29, aided by the schoolchildren from Trekenner Primary School who presented their project file on ‘Repurposing Everyday Objects’.

After a speech by Cornwall Councillor for the Stoke Climsland Ward Neil Burden (Independent) who told the gathering about the history of these phone-boxes, Godfrey was presented with a ‘thank you’ rosette by local Anne Sheldrake who also provided the flowers outside the new library.
