A WEST Devon village is waiting to hear the outcome of its Big Lottery application for a new community centre — and in the meantime supporters will be raising funds by taking part in marathons.
A community centre for Lifton, for which planning permission has been granted to be built on land opposite 1 Park Wood Rise, Fore Street, has been in the pipeline for more than 20 years.
The final application for a £550,000 grant from the Big Lottery was submitted in January, and those involved with plans for the centre hope to hear the outcome by the end of May.
Secretary Vin Marshall said of the project: "It's been a long time because to start with there was nowhere to build it, then a long time to get the land, a lot of fundraising.
"It has taken a long time but we are getting closer."
Two Lifton women, Kirsty Freeman and Jeanette McFadzean, are running the London marathon on April 26 for Lifton Community Centre — charity number 1146871.
Both have young families and would like to see a modern venue in the village, which can be used by everyone.
To support them you can sponsor them via Lifton Village stores and S T Lane, Tinhay, or via their justgiving sites — http://www.justgiving.com/Kirsty-Freeman2">www.justgiving.com/Kirsty-Freeman2 and http://www.justgiving.com/Jeanette-Mcfadzean">www.justgiving.com/Jeanette-Mcfadzean
