A NUMBER of members and players of Delabole Football and Cricket Club swapped winter clothes for cricket kits, tutus and even a mankini on New Year’s Day, as they took to the waters for a more than chilly winter’s dip at Port Gaverne.

The New Year’s Day swim, organised by Delabole Football and Cricket Club to raise much-needed funds for the club, saw a great turnout at Port Gaverne on January 1, as people came along to witness both players and club supporters dive into the freezing waters in some eyebrow-raising fancy dress.

One of the organisers, Sam Turner, told the Post: “It was great, very cold — it cured the hangover pretty quickly. The event was one of the best we’ve had in years.

“They used to do it years ago, but we started it up about five years ago. Funds raised were for the football and the cricket club and we raised about £1,500 from pure sponsorship.

“Well done to everyone who turned up, supported us and came to watch!”

After the swim, swimmers and supporters headed back to the Delabole Workman’s Club for some much needed refreshments and a chance to warm up.
