FORMER singer and drummer, Dave Bedson, from Woolsery, has taken to the recording studio after a seven-hour operation for thyroid cancer which removed nine lymph nodes, to inspire others affected by the disease.

The singer who has played with various 60s and 70s bands over his 50 years as a session band member including, The Kinks, chose to record ‘My First, My Last, My Everything’ in tribute to Barry White, who friends likened his voice to after recovering from his operation.

The song, recorded at former Paperlace band member, Chris Morris studio, has to date raised £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The retired Petroc, premises manager, who booked Chris Morris to play at his hotel Pen-Y-Morfa in St Mawgan in the 80s, has always held an affiliation with music.

He said: “I wanted something positive to come out of my diagnosis. My operation happened on the day that I was supposed to retire. I want to inspire others to realise it doesn’t have to be the end. My hope is when I am feeling better to build a recording studio of my own.

“This song seemed an apt tribute. Especially given the change in my voice from a high pitch to a low one. It is also a thank you to my wife and all those who have helped me since my diagnosis.”

The retiree added, his gratitude for the help, both his wife of over 40 years, Jean and his family, Macmillan Cancer Support and hospital staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital have given since his diagnosis.

Dave said: “I cannot thank everyone enough. The surgeon, George Barratt, and the follow-up team were fantastic, and Jean, has just been my rock throughout!”

Reflecting on the passing of Sarah Harding, Girls Aloud, to breast cancer, and friends who too have been diagnosed with the disease, the charitable singer, said: “I urge everyone to get themselves checked if they suspect any odd symptoms or lumps. My wife encouraged me to go when I noticed a lump on my neck, and I will be forever grateful.”
