WIDEMOUTH Bay is amongst the beaches to be visited by the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) Beach Clean Crew this summer, as part of the third installment of their 'Barefoot Friendly' tour.
Widemouth is one of five beaches across England and Wales that will be visited to make sure they are all as clean as possible to enjoy.
In 2009 the group
welcomed over 600 volunteers who helped remove over two tonnes of litter from the six beaches attended. They are aiming to make this year's tour more successful than ever, attracting even more supporters and removing even more unwanted litter from the nation's beautiful beaches.
Studies show that each year our tide lines are flooded with ever-increasing amounts of marine litter. Over 70 per cent of this litter is plastic, which sadly causes the deaths of over a million marine mammals and seabirds each year.
The clean will take place on Sunday, August 1 starting from the Widemouth beach car park at 3pm and finishing at 5pm.
All beach cleaners will get a free Barefoot/SAS Volunteers t-shirt and, as a thank you for their time, there will be a free barbecue on the beach – accompanied by samples of Barefoot Wines.
This is the third year that Barefoot has partnered with the SAS team and the beach cleaning campaign. Barefoot supports hundreds local and community events, charity fundraisers, music festivals and sporting events throughout the year and the SAS partnership is an integral part of the community project work.
All volunteers are asked to come dressed in appropriate clothing, including footwear, for the weather on the day of their beach clean.
SAS Campaign Officer, Dom Ferris, said: "Every time we do a beach clean, wherever it is in the country, we are blown away by the support we receive from the general public. People really value their beaches and want to do their part to protect them, just like the whole team at SAS. Please join us to make more beaches 'Barefoot Friendly' this summer."
Chief 'Barefooter', Ali Feest, added: "It's great to be able to support such a worthwhile campaign and we are honoured to be working with the SAS again for the third year in a row.
"The tour is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to get together and show their support for British beaches. We are looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck into the 2010 tour."
