AFTER huge crowds attended the Tetcott Hunt’s Boxing Day meet in Holsworthy it was more of the same for the traditional meet at The Tree Inn, Stratton, on New Year’s Day.

The support for trail hunting was as strong as ever with people spilling off the pavements around the popular historic coaching inn.

Phones and cameras were soon clicking to record the colourful tradition stretching back over hundreds of years.

Master huntsman Simon Cann was pleased to see the show of public support. He said: “The welcome we received from the public for this meet is amazing with the whole area packed with people. The hounds in particular love it as they mingle with the crowds, really enjoying being stroked and patted, particularly by the youngsters.

“The beautifully turned out horses and riders also received a lot of attention and clearly enjoyed the occasion while waiting patiently to set off to enjoy riding across the open countryside thanks to the continuing support of farmers and landowners.”

The master huntsman and the hunt staff were also delighted with the excellent support of the pub’s licensees, especially since it was their very first experience of hosting a meet.

Kath Amery and Simon Floyd have owned the pub now for only six months, but got stuck in and provided a real treat of tasty snacks and mulled wine.

They didn’t really know what to expect but said they thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. Simon said: “We have enjoyed our first six months here, made so successful by the support of tourists and local people.

“While hinting is not completely new to Kath, I was totally amazed by the gathering and it was wonderful to be involved with a spectacular local tradition supported by so many of the public. I enjoyed it so much that Kath and I are really looking forward to this annual event next year.”

After the riders had had their fill the master huntsman led the hunt down Fore Street and out into the countryside to enjoy the hounds following the pre-laid scent trails.
