The St Giles Women’s Guild recently held its summer fete in aid of Devon Freewheelers Blood Bikes.
The fete was opened by Tony Unwin, who came on his bike, from the Devon Freewheelers. After a short talk about the work that they do all over Devon he was presented with a button hole by four year old Jenson Colwill, whose great grandmother, Rosemary Wonnacott, is one of the founding members.
There were many different stalls selling home-made cakes, groceries, books, plants and bric-a-brac. There was also a fruit cake, made and decorated by member Louise Finn, which people had to guess the weight of. Also how many sweets in the jar and guess the name of a teddy.
The cake was won by Jo Shindler, who guessed the exact weight. The sweets were won by Evie Crocker and the teddy was won by Ruby Coshall. Afternoon tea was also served with savouries and cakes.
The fete raised £399.10 on the day. With money raised earlier from the New Year lunch raffle and bring and buy in March the total amount to be donated to Devon Freewheelers will be £486.80.
Guild secretary Trish Shanks said: “It is a fantastic amount for such a worthwhile local charity especially because of the difficult times we are living in. A big thank you to all the members, helpers and everyone who came along and supported us.”
