Launceston Town Hall turned green earlier this month, as students filled its halls passionately discussing the environment.

On Wednesday, November 8, ‘Eco Champions’ from across eight local primary schools came together at Launceston Town Hall as part of Andaras Trust’s inaugural Sustainability Event.

Children were involved in a number of workshops from groups passionate about the environment and sustainability, including Surfers Against Sewage, Sustrans, Ministry of Eco Education and Green Schools Project.

As part of the event, each school’s ‘Eco Committee’, which is comprised of children from Key Stage 2, delivered enthusiastic presentations about the work they have been undertaking in their own schools to live and work more sustainably and maximise the positive impact they are having.

Some of the presentations included: Coads Green’s zero waste lunch box project; Lew Trenchard’s rewilding project; North Petherwin and Werrington’s bio diversity research and ‘Hope for the Future’ workshop; Princetown shared a presentation about the impact of their biomass boiler; St Catherine’s shared information about becoming bee keepers; St Stephen’s offered a visual presentation with children riding bikes and scooters emphasizing the importance of sustainable transport and the impact is has on the quality of air that we breathe; and Windmill Hill shared their presentation ‘A day in the life of a sustainable Windmill Hill Academy pupil’, which included the implementation of a community larder and reducing waste at lunchtimes.

Following the success of the event, a spokesperson from Surfers Against Sewage said: “I just wanted to say a big thank you for inviting to take part in such a special day last week. We came away so inspired by the children and what they are doing to make change in the world!”

Plans have now been put in place to keep updated about how these projects are thriving. However, thanks to the event, many new ideas were formed which are already starting to take seed back in each school.

A spokesperson from the event added: “We can’t wait to come together as a trust family again next year and hear about how our children are shaping our world’s future.”
