YEAR 8 students at Budehaven Community School were proud to welcome representatives of Cancer Research UK and Cornwall Air Ambulance to their end of year assembly on the last Monday of the autumn term.

Both organisations received a cheque for £275 to support their work in the local community and spoke to the year group about how the money raised will be used to help those in need.

The students had been fundraising over a six-month period to raise money for the two charities they had nominated and voted for as those they wished to support during their key stage three studies.

Money was raised through a variety of events, including a sponsored walk, cake sales and guess the sweets in the jar, which were organised independently by each form group.

Particularly noteworthy was the contribution of 8HPE (formerly 7DRN) who walked from Bude to Sandymouth in the worst July weather possible! Co-ordinator of learning and personal wellbeing for Year 8, Lisa O’Leary said she was ‘extremely proud of the efforts of the students in the year group who took on the challenge set for them with great enthusiasm’.

Special thanks were expressed to the form tutors, who supported the students with their ideas.

Cheques were presented by winners and runners-up of the recent Year 8 Food Aspire challenge —Raily Graham, Yasmin Hambly, Amy Johnson, Jonathan Robertson, Ethan Brown and Bethany Hiatt.
