A great turnout of 16 Saundersfoot Strollers met up on a lovely warm, sunny, spring morning, at Beggars Reach Hotel, at Burton, to do a very pleasant easy walk through the back lanes and woodland footpaths of Benton woods, via Benton Castle.

Spring was very much in evidence, with an abundance of wild flowers, young lambs, May blossom covering the hedgerows and the trees greening up with new leaves - what a great time of the year to be out walking in the countryside.

Two new members joined our group on the walk, having just moved to the area; also two returning holidaymakers from the Forest of Dean, who usually join us when they holiday in Tenby, so good to have their company.

This was a particularly interesting walk for The Strollers as the route took them right by Benton Castle, a landmark which they see when doing the walk on the opposite river bank from Lawrenny Quay. The original castle tower dates back to the 13th century and is now a private residence, having been renovated in the 1930s.

After their walk, The Strollers enjoyed tasty refreshments in fine style at the Beggars Reach Hotel where a very warm welcome was extended to them.

Stroller Poem for the day written by Helene Mckenna

Ten o'clock at Beggars Reach, The Strollers gathered round,

The caw of rooks and bleating lambs, a happy springlike sound.

Between the trees of Benton Wood the footpaths took us through

A winding trail of primroses pale, and anemones cerulean blue.

Benton Castle, rounded towers, whitewashed, rose by Cleddau shore

A Knight's Fee paid to Bishop Bec in golden years of yore:

Alpacas watched us passing by from nearby farmers field,

We watched them back and thought how much curly wool each one yield:

Glimpses of the estuary teased our eyes, ponds and lakes as well,

A trace of green bedecked our way as we strolled each dip and dell.

Then back to Beggars Reach we came where the welcome was warm and good

Cos' Saundersfoot Strollers enjoy a walk, but definitely like their food.
