RESIDENTS have come out in force to express their concern at the prospect of losing one of Stratton’s community resources.
Uncertainty is growing in Stratton over the future of the town’s only shop and Post Office, after Bude-Stratton Town Council revealed it is considering selling 1 Lords Court, the property which houses Stratton Stores and Post Office.
On Saturday, October 11, around 100 local residents packed into a public meeting to make their feelings about the decision clear.
For many, their worry surrounds the prospect of Stratton losing its identity — instead becoming a branch of Bude.
Those at the meeting voiced fears that if the shop closes, Stratton will lose its last remaining local amenity, forcing residents, including the elderly and those without transport, to travel into Bude for everyday essentials.
Two Stratton ward councillors, Cllr Peter LaBroy and Cllr Tom O’Sullivan, were in attendance to listen to residents’ concerns and explain the council’s perspective, alongside Cllr Faye Emery who represents the town at Cornwall Council.
The town council purchased the property in April 2023 not only to safeguard local services, but also with the intention of providing affordable housing options for local people through refurbishment of the flats above the shop. However, the cost of bringing those flats up to standard has proven significant, leading the council to review the site’s long-term viability.
Despite widespread concern, Stratton Stores does not currently appear on the agenda for the council’s corporate and democratic services committee meeting on Thursday, October 16, though the issue is expected to be discussed at the full council meeting on Thursday, November 6.
In response, local resident Kerry Box has joined with other volunteers to establish the Stratton Community Action Group, which aims to coordinate local efforts and represent residents’ voices.
“The turnout at Saturday’s meeting showed just how much people care about keeping Stratton’s shop and Post Office alive,” said Kerry. “This isn’t just about convenience — it’s about community. We’re determined to work together and find a solution that keeps these vital services here in Stratton. I would urge all Stratton residents to attend the upcoming town council meetings and make their voices heard.”
Cllr LaBroy said: “The Stratton community showed up in real numbers and were clear in their desire for the town council to make sure the future for the shop is secure... All resident council tax payers of Bude and Stratton will be affected by our decisions, and I always have that at the forefront of my mind.”
While Cllr O’Sullivan added: “Clearly Stratton residents are passionate about the long-term future of their shop, which is also a valued community hub... I have no doubt that, as always, fellow councillors will weigh up all the relevant matters before reaching their decision.”
Residents are now urging the council to work closely with the community to secure both the future of Stratton Stores and the affordable housing opportunities the property was originally intended to deliver.
