A DONATION of £795 from the Co-operative's Community Fund has helped the Bude Street Pastors volunteers to continue to assist statutory authorities and the police at night time. The Bude Street Pastors were set up by representatives from local churches to bridge the gap between police, the local authority and the community. The team of volunteers works in the community on Friday and Saturday nights, with a focus on care for individuals and their safety. Whilst Street Pastors have existed elsewhere in the UK for some time, the group in Bude was established in February this year and launched on the streets in May, ready for the summer season. Kevin Hogarth, co-ordinator said: "We are extremely grateful for this grant from The Co-operative as the service our volunteers provide has already made a significant and positive impact on the local community and it will help us train more and provide better cover."Andrew North, regional secretary for the Co-operative in the South West said: "The Community Fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities and supporting the Bude Street Pastors is certainly a worthy cause. Many community groups share the same values as the Co-operative and could benefit from an award and we would certainly welcome their applications." The Community Fund offers grants of between £100 and £2,000 to community projects across the country. Local Co-operative members' committees allocate awards based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others. About £200,000 is available annually in the region to support charities and community groups and application forms are available online at http://www.co-operative.coop/community-Fund">www.co-operative.coop/community-Fund or by phoning 0161 827 5879.
