Guitar player Steve White will make the 11,000-mile flight from his home in New Zealand to play a one-night only gig with former ’80s cover band Thin Red Line.

Steve, who lived in Launceston before moving to New Zealand, will be reunited with his band for the first time in 25 years in what is likely to an emotional and memorable night.

Thin Red Line last played together in the summer of 1991 and were one of the most popular bands in the area.

The band, which covered tracks from the 1980s, including those by Bryan Adams and Simple Minds, have dusted off their equipment and begun rehearsing for the reunion, which will be held at the Strawberry Fields in Lifton on Saturday, September 26.

The Launceston-based group have not been able to practise together because of the distance factor and only have a few days to put together about 20 tracks.

Keyboard player Guy Hopkins, formerly from Launceston, will also be travelling for the gig from his home near Winchester.

Steve, a print manager from Auckland told the Post: “I’ve been rehearsing on my own but because of modern technology we’ve been able to share music files via Dropbox, which has made things a bit easier. I’ve also been able to Skype the guys to work out chords and arrangements.”

Drummer and singer Gren Moore, who conceived the idea of the reunion said: “It’s quite nerve-racking really because we won’t know how we are going to sound until we are altogether two-days before the gig.”

Sound engineer Jamie Ellacott said: “These guys haven’t seen each other for more than 20 years and we are going to be a bit rusty at first but it will come together quickly.

“We’ve put together a set of old favourites that we used to play but we have also put together some contemporary tracks from bands like Coldplay, Example and Bastille.”
