YES, it is true, Launceston WI is 100 years old and still alive and kicking.
In order to celebrate this auspicious occasion a ‘star-studded’ birthday party was held at Trethorne on Thursday, May 16, which was the official date the Launceston branch of the WI was formed.
Guests included county chairman Margaret Johnson, county advisor Kathy Reed and members from Coads Green, Altarnun, St Stephens and Lezant WIs as well as ex and current members of Launceston WI — all dressed ‘to kill’, but lacking hats.
The president Rosemary Freestone welcomed the guests and the party kicked off with a musical treat by Liz and David Jones who entertained those present with a selection of songs by Flanders and Swann, some Stanley Holloway monologues and a spot of Scott Joplin. This was greatly enjoyed by all — just the right vintage!
They say ‘follow that’, which the WI certainly did with a delicious tea followed by the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake. The afternoon concluded with the birthday toast proposed by Margaret Johnson and the reply from Rosemary Freestone. A good time was had by all. A spokesperson added: “We now look forward to the next 100 years!”
