The scene is set for a dramatic summer with a difference this August, as Tintagel Castle is looking to attract visitors with a specially written script that puts a humorous modern twist on a famous legend. Staff at the castle have written a short light-hearted play for families based around the classic King Arthur legend of the sword and the stone. It features well-known characters including Merlin, Arthur, Guinevere, Kay and Hector. The three staff members — Matt Ward, Shelley Lovegrove and Lisa Knight — have even made their own authentic costumes and will be out and about in Tintagel village performing their play in character, and handing out free copies of the script to encourage visitors to the castle to perform their own fun version. There is also the opportunity for one lucky script-holder to win a year's joint membership to English Heritage. The play received its 'premiere' on Monday at the top of the castle track in Tintagel Village. Karen Pike from English Heritage said: "The staff at Tintagel are all so enthusiastic about the castle and its legends that they wanted to find a new, enjoyable way to help spread the word. They've had fantastic fun making their own story and costumes, and now visitors can pick up a free script to bring a little bit of the Arthur legend to life for themselves. So whether you're a wizard in waiting, would like to be a knight, or long to be a beautiful princess, come along and discover one of the most dramatic places in the British Isles — and perhaps a hidden talent for acting too!" Free copies of the script, which takes around five minutes to perform, will be available from the ticket kiosks at Tintagel Castle during August while stocks last. For younger visitors who prefer seeing actors than being actors, there are Pirate Tales every Wednesday and King Arthur's Tales to enjoy each Thursday in August.
