DESPITE the blustery weather, the St Piran’s Day walk in Bude was a great success, according to the town’s mayor.
Around 50 people walked over the Downs at Bude on St Piran’s Day, March 5, to celebrate the iconic day in the Cornish calendar.
Mayor, Bob Willingham, said: “Considering the weather, which was so windy and wet, I thought there wouldn’t have been a very good turnout, but when we got there, there was a huge procession of people flying over the Downs, which was really lovely to see.”
The piper, Bob Price, led the procession with some traditional Cornish music and the iconic ‘Trelawney’ getting spirits high as they made their way to the surf club for warm drinks and saffron cake, which was very well received. Cllr Willingham continued: “It was fantastic that so many people turned out on this wet and blowy day. The Cornish piper sent us off on our march and welcomed our return to the surf club where there was a very welcome hot cup of tea and saffron cake.
“It was very enjoyable. It was my first time as mayor of Bude celebrating St Piran’s Day. The master of the ceremony, Peter Vickery, led the procession looking very dapper in his black coat, and everyone was waving their St Piran’s flags. It was very lovely, and was so nice to see everyone get together. It was a very sociable event.”
