YEAR 6 children from St Petroc’s School travelled to Newquay Airport to take part in the South West Greenpower racing event as part of the IET Formula Goblin Project.

The day attracts 83 race teams from schools across Devon and Cornwall who have been inspired to take an interest in engineering in a fun and innovative way allowing children to build their very own functioning and drivable electric car! The children raced their cars and now await their official placing.

Ben Hilton, head of games and DT, said: “The kit comes flat packed with step by step instructions which help the children learn about friction, electricity, circuitry, timings and tactics associated with a professional approach to racing, on top of the designing and branding the car.

“The children have worked very hard over the last year building, designing, testing and ultimately racing the car. It was a great experience to see the children working as a team and also helping out other teams too on the day who needed tools. Special thanks to Vaughn Curnow from Greenpower and Cornwall College.“

Headmaster Dan Thornburn said: “It is fantastic to see hundreds of children being inspired to becoming future engineers, matheticians and scientists.”
