THE first round of the Rotary Club of Bude's annual Junior Youth Speaks evenings, a knock-out competition towards a final for all schools in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly and south west Devon, has taken place.

Four teams from St Mark's, Morwenstow, and Kilkhampton Junior Schools took part. They spoke on the following subjects: 'Have you got the X-factor?', 'A fair day's wage for a fair day's work', 'What's in your cereals?' and 'Why is the rainforest important to the well-being of our planet?'.

The quality of the speakers was excellent, and gave the three-person panel of judges a problem to decide on the winners. After considerable deliberation, they announced that the team from St Mark's School speaking on 'What's in your cereals?' was the winner.
