ON FRIDAY, November 4, the Space Odyssey’s dome visited St Joseph’s School as part of the student enrichment programme to help inspire scientists of the future.

All students from Year 3 to Year 11 were able to experience the space dome, an exciting Space Odyssey mobile planetarium which gives the students a 360 degree, 3D digital experience.

The presentation in the dome includes high-resolution images, animations, movies and computer simulations. In addition, the Year 10 and Year 11 students experienced some fascinating facts and detailed discoveries about cells, as their lesson explored cell structures & organelles, DNA, stem cells and genetics. It was very beneficial for learning, as it linked to the GCSE syllabus the children are studying.

Years 3 to 9 experienced and explored space while in the dome. They followed in the footsteps of British astronaut Tim Peake, as they were taken inside the International Space Station, and learnt about the night sky and the constellations.

It was a great experience for all of the students who thanked the Friends of St Joseph’s for funding the event. And who knows: it may inspire a future astronaut to enter space following their exciting day at St Joseph’s School, Launceston.
