ST JOSEPH’S students remembered those who gave their lives for this country in a variety of ways last week.
Year 6 posted messages of remembrance on notice boards in the foyer. As part of their English lessons, Year 8 have been reading Private Peaceful and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas. In response to their studies, they produced models which are currently displayed in the foyer. This was a particularly poignant display of elements of World War 1 and World War 2 for students to see as they entered the main hall for the Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday, November 10. This was led by Year 9 and included the laying of the wreath, the Last Post, ably played by Mr Gonella, and a minute’s silence.
The school were also joined by Peter Rowe and Terry Sully, veterans of the Falklands War, who spoke of being on a warship that sank.
Last Friday St Joseph’s observed the national minute’s silence in senior school classrooms whilst the junior school lined up in the playground to pay their respects.
On Remembrance Sunday, pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 joined Launceston’s parade and paid their respects with the rest of the town. Five Year 11 pupils read the names of those lost alongside five pupils from Launceston College.
Headteacher, Mr Oliver Scott, said: “I am proud of all the pupils and the respect they showed to those who lost their lives so tragically.”
