After an absence of two years, St Giles on the Heath was able to stage its August Horticultural Show.

The event was slightly scaled down on previous years to gauge interest from the community and, despite the poor growing season, the event was well supported by the village and there were entries in nearly every class.

Particularly eye-catching were the exhibits in the floral art and homecraft sections to mark the platinum Jubilee.

Fruit and vegetable classes were exhibited in the skittle alley, floral art, handicraft, homecraft and art were on display in the Coronation Hall and cream teas were served in the Jubilee Room.

Prizes were presented by Elizabeth Bale, a former resident and flower show supporter, who has moved to Somerset. She said: “The first show I entered here was in 1973 and it’s lovely to come today and see so many people I know still supporting the show.”

Chairman of the show committee Vanessa Wonnacott said the show had proved to be a great occasion for the community to get back together and she thanked everyone for their support.

She said that although the show was smaller than previous years, it was hoped it would grow back again and added: “See you all again next year.”

Judges were: Brian Wonnacott, Christine Axford, Anne Rowe, Darren Williams and Jackie Perkin.

Trophies were awarded for the most points in each section and there were garden vouchers for the best exhibit in the sections.
