THE St Giles Women's Guild held its Summer Fete recently in aid of the RNLI. It was well attended by local people coming along to support the charity.
The fete was opened by John Mann from the local branch of the RNLI, who explained how important the charity was around our coastline and on the beaches. He said that last year, in the 14 lifeboat stations around Cornwall, they launched lifeboats 434 times and assisted 406 people.
The busiest lifeboat stations were Newquay on the north coast and Falmouth on the south. The RNLI lifeguards were also very busy across the 57 beaches patrolled by the charity. Lifeguards dealt with over 8,000 incidents and helped nearly 9,000 people. They also saved 39 lives.
