ST Breward WI celebrated success this year on winning the Royal Cornwall Show cup for their interpretation and presentation of ‘Reuse, Recycle — Too Good to Waste.’

Fran Calver, president of St Breward WI, said on finding out her club had won: “I was thrilled. It was lovely. When we went home from here yesterday [Wednesday after setting up the entries] I said it could be anybody’s, it’s such a high standard which it always is.”

Fran said it was the second time the club had won the cup during her presidency, though St Breward has also won the cup previously.

The Royal Cornwall Show cup was presented to Fran last Thursday by show president the Rt Rev Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro.

Barbara Corbett, federation chairman, said of the WI competition entries: “I think they are fantastic. When I first saw them I thought, ‘where would you start with that?’ I think the standard as usual is high and members have come up trumps.”

Local WI competition results included: Royal Cornwall Show cup — 1, St Breward; 2, St Neot; 3, Bude; 4 (joint), Bodmin Gaolbirds; 4, Jacobstow. Nan Collier Award for best floral art — Joan Trewin, Bude WI. Barbara Reed trophy for ‘Royal Celebration’ card — 3, Jill Baker, Jacobstow WI.
