POLICE and concerned residents are continuing their battle to combat speeding in villages.

A road safety evening, organised by St-Giles-on-the-Heath Parish Council, was held on Monday, March 17.

Chair of the council Ken Hamlyn called for the event after receiving several letters of complaint regarding speeding and dangerous use of the road in the village.

Representatives of Holsworthy Police and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service gave presentations on the consequences of distractions, from using a phone to changing a CD when driving.

Cllr Hamlyn said: "The police and fire brigade were very good. I am very pleased with the turnout. It gave people a chance to see what happens, even just waving out of a window while driving.

"If there is a need, or the emergency services have something new to share, then we would run the event again. The parish council will support things that try to save lives or stop stupid accidents. We are always there if needed."
