COMPLAINTS continue to make their way to Camelford Town Council about speeding through the town.
At the meeting of the town council on Thursday, August 1, two residents had sent correspondence about speeding through Victoria Road.
Starting discussions, mayor Claire Hewlett said: “Speeding happens on every road in Camelford — resources are limited. We have responded to the correspondence and we have put them in touch with the community speed watch group and the police.”
Town clerk, Esther Greig, said: “We have proven that there is a problem [with speeding], Highways have confirmed the signage is correct. It is down to the drivers — many who are local — to not speed, and it’s down to the police to enforce.”
Deputy mayor Rob Rotchell said: “The majority of people speeding are from this area and I’m concerned how much the council is being dragged into this because it’s a police matter.”
Cllr Emma Grigg suggested getting local schools involved in a campaign to make drivers decrease their speed, creating posters and pictures to make motorists aware of their speed and the consequences that may come with speeding through a residential area. She said: “It hits home for a lot of people, and it would make me think more as a driver.”
Cllr Hewlett added: “We all know we have a problem.”
It was suggested that councillors could share statements from the town council’s social media pages regarding speeding and how to report it to the police.
To report speeding in Camelford, residents should contact the Camelford Police officers. People can also consider joining the Camelford Community Speed Watch team, who are always on the lookout for new volunteers.
