RESIDENTS of St Breward were shocked to see the bomb squad in the village last week.

Police and the Royal Navy's Southern Diving Group were called to a property on Tuesday, March 13 lunchtime following a report that a live World War II Mills pineapple size hand grenade had been found.

It was located in Churchtown's Mabena Cottage, a listed stone building originally built in 1640, which is being renovated by owners Cameron and Glen Darby, who live in Helland.

It was believed to be hidden away in the former derelict cottage some 70 years ago, although nothing had been found on the site previously.

Cameron, owner of the property, had never picked up a grenade before, but he remained calm on finding the device, which was halve buried in a wall and the pin still in tact.

He said: "Being in the building industry, you are always aware of these things."
