PARENTS, pupils and visitors to St Joseph’s School in Launceston were treated to a spectacular stage event as ‘We Will Rock You’ played to a transformed school hall.

The musical, written by Ben Elton, was based around Queen’s incredible songbook and saw pupils from Year 7 to Year 11 bring audiences to their feet with a professional level of performance.

While this was a real team effort, the audience was particularly impressed with the dynamic between Grace Felstead as ‘Galileo’ and Ruby Clare as ‘Scaramouche’, in the lead parts, while Maia Hanbury Tenison’s performance of Only the Good Die Young was a showstopper in every performance.

The menacing transformation of Hattie Loe into ‘Killer Queen’ brought real tension, while Rohan Sturdy as ‘Pop’ showed superb comic timing and stage presence.

The school’s outgoing director of Music, Mrs Elisabeth Mann, head of Drama, Mr David Richey, and head of English, Mrs Rosemary O’Brien, gave their all to get the very best out of the children, and Mr Richey commented that it was ‘a privilege to see the team effort involved.’

The investment in staging, sound and lighting and the upgrade to the school’s hall, that will now be a legacy of this amazing stage production, have proved to be very worthwhile indeed.

In the words of the school’s previous headteacher, Mrs Sue Rowe: “Amazing! I can’t tell you enough how good this was…I have seen the show twice in London and the St Joseph’s performance surpassed the London show. Very well done to all…so professional and talented.” Congratulations were extended to all involved.
