A South Petherwin child minder has been voted group target member of the year by fellow slimmers at the Slimming World meetings held in the St John Ambulance Hall, Launces­ton.

Claire Curtis lost 3.5 stone in just 24 weeks, achieving her target on the night of the competition. At Slimming World, members choose the weight goal they would like to achieve and once they reach it they can attend the group for free to help them keep the weight off.

Like many people Claire put weight on when having her children and never managed to shift it. At her heaviest Claire always wanted to sit down as her legs ached constantly and she was unable to keep up with her children. She also suffered with knee problems because she was overweight, but all that is now a thing of the past. The final straw for Claire was when a colleague asked if she was pregnant!

Claire was inspired to join by her mother-in-law Monica Skelton who has been a target member in Launceston for over two years. She felt very nervous about joining as she went on her own but found the group so friendly she was soon at ease.

Claire had tried other diets but always found them too restrictive and hated the way she was always hungry. Claire said: "The great thing about Slimming World is the plans are so easy to follow and the support system in group is amazing. We are always swopping ideas for meals and I have made so many friends."

Slimming World's 'Body Magic' plan has encouraged Claire to get active. She has set up a walking club with her friends. She also uses Wii Fit to increase her exercise and to get the whole family fit. She is hoping to start horse riding again as well.

Claire's consultant Kate Elston said: "Claire has been a real inspiration to everyone in group. She is a very popular member and always offers ideas and support."

The last word goes to Claire's husband who is so proud of all she has achieved. He said: "It's like having a new woman in my life, she is so much happier and much more confident."
