A WONDERFUL World Book Day was held at St Joseph’s School on Thursday, March 3.
In addition to celebrating the rich and varied world of books, the day also gave the school the opportunity to raise funds for the charity Book Aid International.
More than £200 was raised for books for schools in Africa.
Parents and students alike had worked hard to produce a stunning array of costumes depicting many different characters from their favourite books.
The Senior Class Effort prize went to Year 9 for The Chronicles of Narnia. Who could fail to be impressed by Elspeth dressed as a wardrobe and Henny as a lamp post?
It seemed an impossible task for the judges to choose between the Year 7 entries featuring Peppa Pig, the Harry Potter stories and Alice in Wonderland, however, after much deliberation, the boy wizard Harry Potter won the day.
Prizes also went to Hetty Feather, Sapphire Battersea and the Queen of Hearts.
The junior costumes were no less impressive, with prizes for Smee, (Captain Hook’s sidekick in Peter Pan) Stick Man, Captain Hook, The BFG complete with the most amazing ears, the White Rabbit and Jack and his Beanstalk.
No prizes were awarded to staff, although they too created some wonderful costumes, ranging from Robin Hood, Mary Poppins, Granpa’s Great Escape and The Hundred and One Dalmations.
A school spokesperson said: “Congratulations to all on a very enjoyable day that supports some very important work in developing countries.”
