AT the well-attended AGM of Holsworthy Amateur Theatrical Society last Monday, October 3, the chairman Peter Whitehead gave a review of what he said had been a ‘solid’ year, writes Christine Williams.
There had been three HATS productions including ‘Noises Off’, which was awarded a NODA South West District 7 Achievement Award, and the pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’, which was seen by 2,500 people and provided the society with the bulk of its income.
The theatre had been let for other events during the year including a Rotary concert, a town band concert, Mevagissey Male Voice Choir and JSLN Dance Company.
It was announced that among several improvements that have been made to the theatre facilities were new flats, new two-way radios, fire and security enhancement, and new lighting in the auditorium and props area. A storage unit for costumes has been acquired at Dobles Lane Industrial Estate.
Advice from professional theatres has been sought on the refurbishment of the stage and discussions are taking place to allow on-line ticket reservations and payment by credit card.
It was agreed that the Wonnacott Shield, awarded this year to Chris and Rose Hitchins, should be given annually for an outstanding contribution to the society.
Pat Smith will continue as president for a further year and the following committee members were elected: chairman Peter Whitehead, secretary Annette Dennis, treasurer Celia Sanders, membership secretary Eve Earles, booking manager Amy Clarke, facilities manager Phil Barfett.
Committee members: Denise Moorley, Charles Jeffrey-Hudson, Terina Ellacott, Sue Painter, Heather Prouse and Mary Osborne.
On Tuesday, November 1, at 7.30pm, HATS will be co-operating with units of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service in a fire drill and to make it as realistic an exercise as possible members of the public are invited to come along to the theatre as a mock audience.
HATS members will provide actors and stewards, among whom there will be six pretend casualties.
As many people as possible are needed to fill the theatre, so anyone who requires further information should contact Annette Dennis on 01409 254242.
