A British Army Soldier from Cornwall is running from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise money for veterans struggling with mental health.

Richard Perkins, from Bude, attempted to take on an 879 mile route from Lands End to John O’Groats last year. However, due to injury, he had to cut his journey short having already completed the equivalent of 14 marathons in seven days.

This year, Richard is reversing the route, “running home to Cornwall” and adding a further 220 miles to his journey, tackling 1000 miles in total.

For the last 16 years Richard has served in the British Army, meaning this cause is one very close to his heart, he said: “I have served in the British Army for the past 16 years and continue to do so, I have witnessed first-hand the effects of active duty on one’s health and wellbeing both mentally and physically.

“The Mental Health Foundation estimates five-million veterans in the UK with 20,000 personnel leaving each year. It is common for veterans to develop mental health problems after leaving service, many of whom will experience PTSD. Veteran’s mental health may be made worse due to the stress of transitioning which can then lead to difficulties in relationships, a higher risk of suicide, alcohol misuse and homelessness.”

Richard hopes to use the money raised to purchase a holiday home for Veterans Coastal Retreats, a charity set up by Richard himself in 2020 he said: “It may not seem like much, but I think everyone deserves a chance to take a little time away – either on their own or with their family. I am a proud Cornishman and know how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place with award winning beaches and brilliant hospitality. I want to share this place I call home with veterans from all walks of life who are in need of a little R & R.”
