DISAPPOINTMENT was expressed via social media recently after a support post was removed from one of the WWI memorial trees planted in Stanhope Park, Holsworthy.

The mayor of Holsworthy took to social media in the hope of finding retribution and he says ‘thanks to the power of social media’ the post has since been repaired and the tree restored to its former glory.

Commenting initially via Holsworthy Town Council’s official Facebook page on Saturday, February 23, Cllr Hutchings said: “To the person who decided it would be a good idea to remove one of the supports from one of our trees in the park. You have 48 hours to put it right or we will inform the police and review CCTV. These are not just any trees they are a memorial to the men of Holsworthy who lost their lives in the first world war.”

On the following Monday however he confirmed that the post had been replaced and he expressed his thanks to the community spirit of the town after a number of people offered their support. He told the Post: “I suppose the main thing to take away from this is the community spirit that came out — it was fantastic and shows what a great community we have here in Holsworthy. The issue was rectified very quickly, the person has said they are very sorry for their actions and did repair it. It just goes to show the power of social media!”
