The Great Tree measuring took place in Holsworthy last Friday.
Trustees meet at the tree and measure it on this date every year. The Great Tree has existed from as long ago as 1624, when it formerly stood at the south-east corner of Stanhope Square.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the last town tree, an elm, came down and today the spot is marked with a brass plaque.
The present Great Tree was planted 22 years ago and 'Hereditary Guardians of the Great Tree' have nurtured, guarded and cherished it ever since.
The tree is now 640mm girth, an increase of 9mm on last year.
