THE charitable works over many years of two sisters have been recognised by Camelford Rotary Club.

Sally Moore and Madge Walkey, of Camelford, are the

very deserving recipients of the Rotary Citizens of the Year awards.

The Rotary Club’s Christmas dinner and Citizens of the Year award 2015 event was held at Bowood Golf Club on Tuesday, December 15.

Affectionately known locally as the Walkey sisters, Sally and Madge were born in Fore Street, and have always lived in Camelford. They both worked in Walkey’s shop until their retirement in March 2003.

All through their lives they have been involved with helping others. During their time living at the King’s Arms Hotel they thought it would be fun to run a lending library, hold sales and concerts in the long room while donating the proceeds to Plymouth Hospital.

Later, between 1979 and 1995, they also arranged a local Grand National sweep based at Walkey’s shop. Madge would go door to door and shop to shop, giving locals the chance to put 25p on a horse.

Sally joined the St John Ambulance Brigade, gaining the highest award as a young cadet — the Grand Prior badge.

She then became a cadet leader, then officer, finally in 1983 becoming divisional president and was made a serving sister in 1977. From 1985 until 2010 Sally also collected for the brigade.

For many years Madge has been involved with the Conservative Club, first acting as a runner, then becoming a trustee of the club and from 2010 she has been the elected president.

Both have been involved with Camelford Carnival all their lives. They both entered into the spirit of things in their youth.

Sally was carnival queen one year and Madge often dressed up and one year won first prize as Miss Yesteryear.

They continued with their support, Sally being secretary for more than 40 years and Madge helping arrange the carnival concert and doing the street collection and visiting pubs for donations.

Many local residents will remember going into Walkey’s shop to pour over the photos after the carnivals and have a good chat with them after the events.

They were also members of the original cancer committee and when that folded became founder members of the new committee and remain members to this day, Sally having served as treasurer since 1997 and Madge as secretary since 2008.

Sally and Madge have also helped organise the cancer charity safari suppers from 1989 to 2014 and have continued to collect door to door since 1978.

They both have always been quietly kind and supportive to many people when they have been in need of a visit or a kind word.

Their lifetime of charitable works and support to their community was celebrated at the event. Sally and Madge were each presented with the Camelford Rotary Club Citizen of the Year trophy and scroll.
