HUNDREDS of young singers and musicians performed at the fourth annual Proms in the Castle concert.

Performers from five schools on both sides of the Wye, the Chepstow Community Big Band and a youth theatre delighted a large audience at Chepstow Castle.

A choir from St John's-on-the-Hill School in Tutshill made its debut at the event organised by Chepstow Rotary Club.

Pupils as young as four from Tutshill Church of England performed a medley of Abba hits and the choir and school orchestra from Thornwell Primary School came together.

There were also performances by the folk and jazz bands from Chepstow School, the Wyedean Gospel Choir and a medley by Chepstow Musical Youth Theatre of songs from their acclaimed recent production of Anything Goes.

The concert was opened by a string of numbers from the Chepstow Community Big Band.

Proceeds from the event will help a school expand in one of the poorest areas of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Chepstow Rotary president, Marian Lewis said: "There are 200 students at the school but there are still 150 others outside the door who want the chance of an education."

Mayor of Chepstow, Cllr Dale Rook said: "This is the fourth event celebrating the musical talent we have in Chepstow.

"The Rotary Club has played an important part in the fabric for more than 50 years, supporting our communities and local and international charities."
