I was sorry to read the letter from Hilary Vivian about the sculptures on the Bude Canal (the 'Post', April 9) and the conclusions she reached.
As I understand it, the very talented artist who designed them had been commissioned to find a theme that linked with Bude's maritime heritage and an anchor chain was a good idea. It provided the intertwined links for the resting places along the canal and these would have culminated with a climbing frame in the structure described as a letter A which would have been an interactive art-work in a children's play area. Unfortunately Health and Safety will not allow this.
The structures were not designed to be 'ugliness for the sake of ugliness' and certainly the craftsmanship of the sculptor who designed and made them should be admired.
Bude.
